Preparation

• Clear the area of debris, weeds, unwanted plants and any old edging that will be replaced.

• Prune or remove existing plants as agreed; salvage healthy specimens for replanting if requested.

• Mark out the new bed edges and raised wall lines, ensuring levels are appropriate for drainage and visual balance.

Constructing a raised wall (for existing beds)

• Excavate a shallow trench to provide a stable base for the wall material and to set correct finished heights.

• Install a compacted base (sand or crushed rock) where required for the chosen wall material.

• Raised wall addition: construct a new low retaining wall around or within the existing bed to improve definition, create terracing, or raise soil depth for improved root growth.

• Mulch refresh: remove old mulch, refresh soil surface where needed and apply new mulch to agreed depth.

• Plant refresh: replace failed or unsuitable species, add new specimen plants, or infill gaps to rejuvenate the bed.
